5 Healthy Oils To Replace These Bad Ones

5 Healthy Oils To Replace These Bad Ones

Did you know that some of the oils you use in everyday cooking can be harming you?  Tustin Chiropractor explains below.

They are processed oils like Canola, Corn, Soy, Safflower, and Cottonseed.

The processing uses heat and chemicals and can change some of the oil to be “trans-fat”.

Have you heard of trans-fats?  The word ‘trans’ in chemistry denotes a certain molecular structure which is not the normal one that our body recognizes.

Trans-fats have been found to be very damaging.

Recently (back in 2015) the FDA issued its final determination that partially hydrogenated oils (which contain trans-fats) were no longer Generally Recognized as Safe for any use in human food.

Hydrogenation is a chemical process that changes the oils.  This causes trans-fat formation.

Even still, the FDA has allowed some of the hydrogenated products to work their way through the marketplace.  In other words, you can still see ‘partially hydrogenated oils’ on an ingredients list of some processed food products.

Be aware that trans-fat still exist in the oils mentioned at the beginning of this article.  A basic rule is if the oil is in a clear container, it’s no good for you.

Tustin Chiropractor Explains What Oils Are Safe & Healthy To Consume?

This is not a complete list but just 5 suggestions.  Organic, grass-fed sources of fat and oil are best.

  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • Organic Coconut Oil
  • Grass-fed Ghee and Butter (Kerrygold is a good brand)
  • Lard (you can bake with lard again!)
  • Duck Fat

There is much controversy about what is a healthy fat in the popular media.  But in the scientific arena it is pretty clear.  Back in 1990 I first learned that trans-fats were bad for you.  It has taken the FDA 25 years to act.

In summary, trans-fats can trigger inflammation and have been implicated in a wide array of health problems.  They are not good for you.

If you want to reduce inflammation in your body, if you want to eat healthy for your heart and brain and circulation then avoid trans-fats and these industrial processed seed oils.

This article is a deeper dive into this entire topic by a high-quality source, Chris Kresser:  How Industrial Seed Oils are Making Us Sick.
