Tustin Chiropractor Explains The Relation of
Antibiotics & Tendon Problems

Have you ever had tendonitis in Tustin or the surrounding areas?

Remember that the suffix ‘itis’ means inflammation and inflammation typically is painful.

In this case we are referring to inflammation of the tendon.  It can be very painful and can stop someone from running or any other activity that they love to do.

What does this have to do with Antibiotics?

Some years ago the FDA had ordered manufacturers of certain antibiotics to issue a black box warning, the most severe warning the FDA has.  This is to warn physicians and patients about the potential debilitating side effect of tendonitis and tendon rupture from taking antibiotics.

The drug group with this label is called the fluoroquinolones.  One common name in this group is Cipro.  It is used for multiple areas of infection including the urinary tract.

Besides causing this terrible side effect, remember that these antibiotics kill good microbes in our gut; Bacteria that we need to be truly healthy.

These good bacteria help us digest food, boost our immune system, make vitamins for us, keep other ‘bad bacteria’ in check and many many other functions.  In fact, imbalance of the gut flora can lead to other types of infections.

More than ever before we know now to treat our gut friends very well, as they treat us well.

What Can You Do in Tustin To Help Prevent Tendonitis?

Be very careful about when you decide to take antibiotics.  Consult your doctor at Bunch Chiropractic thoroughly.  For example, most common colds are not bacterial. They are viral.  To take antibiotics in that case will do nothing to the viruses, but still have impact on your microflora.

If you have to take antibiotics, consult your doctor and get well educated about the side effects.

Also, have a plan to do your best to revitalize your gut microbes after you’ve finished.  That can include taking in more fermented foods, taking a high quality probiotic and focusing on eating prebiotics (food for the bacteria to eat… many types of fiber for example).

Of course active people can get tendonitis from workouts and training.  There are easy ways to handle these problems most of the time.  That's what we do at our office.

But this might answer the mystery of why someone got tendonitis for no good reason!
